THE SOUNDS OF A SUMMER NIGHT
David Lampel has been the founder and the artistic director of this French–Swedish festival since 2002.
Every year, this classical music festival brings together prestigious French and Swedish musicians for concerts in the magnificent Roslagen region. It was created in 2002 by Paris-based Swedish composer David Lampel, its current artistic director.
Located on the Baltic Sea coast near Stockholm, Roslagen offers a truly idyllic picture of the Nordic summer, with its ports, 19,000 islands, vast forests, countless lakes, and its “capital,” Norrtälje. The event takes place in Skebobruk, a 17th-century ironworks located along the Baltic coast and famous for its exceptional setting. Refreshments, exhibitions, and friendly music lessons are also offered to the public.
In 2003, Claude Debussy's unpublished piano work “Les soirs illuminés par l'ardeur du charbon” (Evenings illuminated by the ardor of coal) was given its world premiere by pianist Jean-Pierre Armengaud, an event that attracted the interest of not only Swedish but also international media (television, radio, press).
In 2007, Swedish television devoted a documentary to the festival. With three broadcasts, it helped to make the event known to a very wide audience.
In 2011, the festival celebrated its 10th anniversary. More than 1,600 visitors took part in this musical celebration, which was recorded and broadcast by Swedish radio.
In 2012, the festival moved to Skebobruk and began collaborating with the Skebobruk cultural association.
In 2015, the festival was awarded a European label by an international jury for “its artistic quality and its impact at the local, national, and international levels.”
In 2023, the festival will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Over the course of these 20 years, more than 150 concerts have been given by over 400 artists in front of more than 20,000 visitors.
In 2026, the festival will take place from July 24 to 26.
